McCall English courses revolve around theme-based text selections. Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions reflect that thematic focus, create an underlying purpose and structure for the course, and, at the same time emphasize the development of critical reading, writing, viewing, speaking, listening, language, and thinking skills. Students alternate between viewing text from a reader’s point of view (comprehension) and a writer’s point of view (analysis). They begin to use their writing to discover their own perspective and understand that of others, through argumentative, explanatory, and narrative writing. Grammar, usage, and vocabulary study draw from the texts read, thus providing a context for understanding the application of effective writing practices
